Africa’s stories – Niyonziima’s project for children
Augustine Niyonziima ha 27 anni ed è nato in Uganda, un paese che sorge su un altipiano nell’Africa Centrale. Augustine è stato un ciclista della Nazionale Ugandese ma da un po’ di tempo è diventato autodidatta, nel 2012 ha cominciato a pedalare e nello stesso anno ha corso il Kwita Izina Cycling Tour in Rwanda senza troppa fortuna. Alla prima tappa di 100 chilometri percorsa alla bellezza di 32 km/h, Augustine e altri 3 corridori ugandesi hanno dovuto ritirarsi dalla corsa.
Augustine Niyonziima is 27 years old and he was borned in Uganda, a country on a flat plateau in Central Africa. Augustine has been a cyclist of the National team of Uganda and in the last period is self employeed, he started cycling in 2012, in that same year he partecipated to Kwita Izina Cycling Tour in Rwanda without too much luck. During the first stage of 100 km, Augustine and other three Ugandan riders quitted the race.
Nel 2015 Augustine è tornato a correre, questa volta al Tour of DRC nella Repubblica Democratica del Congo; nel 2017 arriva sesto al campionato nazionale in linea con 23′ di ritardo dal vincitore. Nel 2018 ha la possibilità di correre i Campionati Continentali in Rwanda e il Tour de Tanzania. (Uganda e Tanzania sono due paesi confinanti che nel corso della storia si sono scontrati più volte).
Augustine partecipated in a new competition in 2015, the Tour of DRC, in the Democratic Republic of Congo for the main cycling race of the country; in 2017 he got the sixth position in the National Championship of Uganda with 23 minutes delay from the winner . In 2018 he got the chance to race the Continental Championship in Rwanda and the Tour of Tanzania. Uganda and Tanzania are two neighboring countries that have often clashed over the course of history.
Adesso Augustine ha abbandonato il suo sogno di diventare un ciclista professionista, sta costruendo un progetto per dare un’opportunità ai ragazzi della sua comunità, andando nelle scuole e nei ghetti di strada. La missione di Augustine è cambiare i giovani rendendoli persone in grado di avere un ruolo per se stessi e per la società in cui vivono, e il suo sogno più grande è creare un team Continental.
Now Augustine put aside his dream to become a professional cyclist, he is now building a project to give a chance to the guys of his community, going in the schools and in the ghetto streets. Augustine’s mission is to try to change young people making them people capable of having a role for themselves and for the society they live in, and his biggest dream is to create a Continental team.
Augustine ha anche un problema, attualmente deve condividere la sua bicicletta con altri tre ragazzini e perciò chiede un aiuto per poter continuare la sua attività.
Augustine has also a problem, currently he must share his bike with other three guys, so he need a new bike to continue his activity.
Augustine non ha mai corso in MTB, se non qualche gara a livello locale, perchè a differenza del ciclismo su strada nella MTB hai bisogno di tante energie e altrettanta esperienza. Però quando ha partecipato ad un festival di MTB al Lakeside Adventure Park con l’obiettivo di raccogliere fondi per Hadija Nazziwa, una ciclista ugandese di 12 anni, era contentissimo, perché quell’evento aveva attirato un sacco di gente. Secondo Augustine il governo dovrebbe usare lo sport per promuovere le bellezze del paese.
Augustine never raced in MTB, except for a few local races, because compared to road cycling it requires a lot of energies and experience. But when he partecipated to a MTB Festival in Lakeside Adventure Park to collect money to support Hadija Nazziwa, an Ugandan cyclist 12 years old, he was very happy because many people took part at the event. Augustine thinks that the government of Uganda should use the sport to promote the attractions of the country.
Augustine lo scorso anno ha accompagnato per qualche chilometro Tomás Mac, un cicloturista partito da Il Cairo in Egitto per raggiungere Città del Capo in Sudafrica. Tomás descrisse Augustine con le seguenti parole “Un ciclista folle, l’ho vergognosamente rallentato con il mio ritmo lento in bicicletta (dò la colpa al peso di tutti i miei attrezzi!). Ma il gentiluomo Augustine è rimasto con me. Abbiamo fatto una bella risata, abbiamo chiacchierato e mi ha persino cantato delle canzoni mentre pedalavo lentamente su per la strada sconnessa”.
Last year Augustine spent some kilometres with Tomás Mac, a cycle tourist that started from Il Cairo in Egypt to reach Cape Town in South Africa. Tomás described Augustine with the following words: “An insane cyclist, I shamefully slowed him down with my slow cycling (I blame the weight of all my gear!) but the gentleman that Augustine is, he stayed with me. We had a great laugh, chats and he even sang songs to me as I rode slowly up any bump in the road.”
