Richard Laizer ha 30 anni, è nato ad Arusha in Tanzania in una famiglia con sette figli, tre fratelli e quattro sorelle. A 11 anni usava la bici per seguire le mucche, ma dopo aver assistito ad una gara locale vinta dai ragazzi del suo villaggio decise di diventare un ciclista. Nel 2006 suo zio, un ex corridore, gli regalò la sua bici; inizialmente la sua famiglia era contraria perchè vedeva il ciclismo come una perdita di tempo dato che lo zio non aveva ottenuto nulla da questo sport. Fu proprio lo zio a sostenerlo e a supportarlo. Quando Richard firmò un contratto con la MTN il padre non era troppo felice, la madre invece vedeva la bicicletta come un pericolo, ma presto la sua paura di trasformò in supporto e sostegno.

Richard Laizer is 30 years old, he is born in Arusha in Tanzania in a family with seven children, three brothers and four sisters. When he was 11 years old he was using a bike to follow the cows, but after attending a local race won by the boys of his village he decided to become a cyclist. In 2006 his uncle, a ex cyclist, gifted his bike to him; initially his family was against it, because they saw cycling as a waste of time since his uncle had got nothing from this sport. His uncle supported him. When Richard signed a contract with MTN the father was not too happy, the mother instead saw the bicycle as a danger, but soon her fear turned into support.

Richard è cattolico. Poco dopo l’inaugurazione di una chiesa cattolica nel suo paese, una mano assassina lanciò una bomba, nell’esplosione morirono due ragazzini e sua madre. Da allora, Richard non pedala solo per sentirsi libero ma anche per amore e riconoscenza nei confronti della madre.

Richard is catholic. Shortly after the inauguration of a Catholic Church in his village , a murderous hand dropped a bomb, two children and his mother died in the blast. Since then, Richard has pedalled not only to feel free himself, but also for love and gratitude to his mother.

Richard è andato a scuola per poco tempo, ha iniziato a 10 anni e ha terminato a 13. Nella sua vita ha provato a diventare un ciclista professionista, ci è riuscito parzialmente quando ha corso dal 2012 al 2014 con la MTN. Ora non si dedica più solo al ciclismo, “è impossibile farlo in Tanzania dove ci sono poche gare”, Richard può anche lavorare in ufficio o guidare.

Richard attended the school for a short time, he started when he was 10 years old and he left when he was 13. In his life he tried to become a professional cyclist, he partially realized his dream when he has raced from 2012 to 2014 with MTN. Now he is not dedicating himself only to cycling, it isn’t possible in Tanzania where there are few races, Richard can also work in an office or drive.

In Tanzania il ciclismo sopravvive grazie alla buona volontà dell’Arusha Cycling Club, dove lui stesso ha imparato ad andare in bici e a coltivare i propri sogni. In Tanzania c’è anche una federazione ciclistica, attiva dal 1967. Nel 2016 il presidente e il suo segretario sparirono, così Richard non poté neanche partecipare ai campionati continentali tenutesi in Marocco.

In Tanzania the cycling survives thanks the good will of the Arusha Cycling Club, where Richard has learnt to ride a bike and follow his dreams. In Tanzania there is also a Cycling Federation, it is operative from 1967. In 2016 the President and his clerk disappeared, so Richard could not participate to the Continental Championship in Morocco.

In Tanzania non c’è neppure regolarmente il campionato nazionale , altrimenti Richard avrebbe conquistato decine di titoli su strada, a cronometro e in mountain bike. Perchè Laizer è un fuoriclasse, un cronoman, un biker e uno scalatore che nel 2013 e 2014 è stato eletto sportivo dell’anno senza rivali, basti pensare che quest’anno in Tanzania ha fatto e vinto tre gare. Il prossimo week-end si disputeranno i Campionati Nazionali 2019.

In Tanzania there is not a National Championship regulary , otherwise Richard would have won dozens of titles on the road, on time trial and with the MTB. Because Laizer is a star player, a time trialist , a biker and a climber who in 2013 and 2014 was elected sportsman of the year without rivals, just think that this year in Tanzania he has made and won three races. During the next week-end the National Championships 2019 will be held.

Nella sua carriera ha affrontato per quattro volte il Tour of Rwanda, la sua corsa preferita. Una gara dura che non fa sconti soprattutto perchè i rwandesi per preparazione e materiale tecnico sono di un altro pianeta. Dopo il contratto con la MTN iniziò a viaggiare e a gareggiare in Brasile, Gran Bretagna, Francia, Sudafrica e Germania.

In his career he has took on the Tour of Rwanda for four times, it is his favourite race. An hard race that does not make “discounts” especially because the Rwandans for preparation and technical material are from another “planet”. After the contract with MTN he started to travel and race in Brasil, Great Britain, France, South Africa and Germany.

Nel 2016 ha ottenuto un nuovo contratto, questa volta con la Stradalli-Bike Aid. Squadra tedesca con in rosa 7 tedeschi, 1 francese, 3 eritrei, 2 rwandesi e 1 tanzaniano, Richard Laizer. La stagione iniziò male in Gabon, all’Amissa Bongo Tropical, dopo quattro tappe dovette arrendersi alla malaria. A maggio tornò a correre con il suo team d’origine (Arusha Cycling Team), poi andò in Etiopia ad agosto per il Tour Meles Zenawi, ad ottobre fu la volta del Kenya per il Tour de Machakos ed infine in novembre il Tour of Rwanda in appoggio al capitano Jean-Bosco Nsengimana che arrivò nono. Un anno partito male finì meglio con qualche vittoria in MTB.

In 2016 he has gotten a new contract, this time with Stradalli-Bike Aid. A German team with seven Germans, one French, three Eritreans, two Rwandans and one Tanzanian, Richard Laizer. The season started badly in Gabon, at the Amissa Bongo Tropical, after four stages he had to surrender to malaria. In May he returned to race with his original team (Arusha Cycling Club), then he went to Ethiopia in August for the Tour Meles Zenawi, in October he was the turn of Kenya for the Tour de Machakos and finally in November the Tour of Rwanda in support of Captain Jean-Bosco Nsengimana who arrived ninth. A bad year ended better with some MTB wins.

Richard ha avuto l’opportunità di capire la differenza tra ciclismo europeo e africano. Se in Europa il ciclismo è organizzazione, in Africa il ciclismo è una guerra dall’inizio alla fine, solo dopo la linea d’arrivo si sancisce una tregua che durerà fino l’indomani, prima di incominciare un’altra battaglia.

Richard has having the opportunity to understand the difference between European and African cycling. If in Europe the cycling is organisation, in Africa the cycling is a “war” from beginning to end, only after the finish line a truce is established that will last until the next day, before starting another “battle”.

L’idolo di Richard è Mark Cavendish, il suo piatto preferito è la pasta e prima di una gara la mangia sempre a colazione. Oltre al ciclismo segue in televisione la Moto GP e il calcio. “Devo ringraziare per il supporto il mio club locale Arusha Cycling Club, Nicola Morganti, un italiano che ci sta aiutando molto e il suo migliore amico Marco Pastonesi”.

The idol of Richard is Mark Cavendish, his favourite dish is past and he always eats it before a race for breakfast. Other cycling he follows on television Moto GP and soccer. “I have to thank for the support my local club Arusha cycling Club, Nicola Morganti, an Italian who is helping us a lot and his best friend Marco Pastonesi”.
